Free food, shelter, and now smartphones; it seems the political parties can go lengths in gaining public favor and votes. The Akhilesh Yadav-led Uttar Pradesh government has announced the Samajwadi Smartphone Yojna or free distribution of smartphones to people. The catch here is that the free smartphones will be given to people if the Akhilesh-led party comes to power following the 2017 Vidhan Sabha elections. Touted as the world’s biggest free smartphone distribution scheme, the Samajwadi smartphone feature apps for rural people that will help them with information about the latest rates of agro products, details of best practices and weather-related data as well. There will also be information available milk producers, along with job and vacancy information, reading material for students, entrance and results, loan and other financial assistance details for small-time businessmen.
It will further include features and applications for women safety and option to reach out to the state government directly for grievances. To ease up the registration process, the party has launched a dedicated online registration portal for the month long registrations that begin on October 10, 2016 and open till November 10, 2016. On the dedicated website www.samajwadisp.in users can register to avail the free smartphone. However, at the time of writing, only certain sections of the website were accessible. To know further details about the scheme, users can click on the register online option and then read about the plan.
In order to receive the free smartphone, a user needs to furnish documents that prove the age is 18 years or older on January 1, 2017, along with documents which indicate the annual family income is less than Rs 6 lakh. The minimum educational qualification required for availing the free smartphone is matriculation or class 10. Once the verification process is completed, the users will get the smartphone delivered at their doorsteps, provided the government wins the 2017 state elections. For Akhilesh Yadav, such initiatives pave way for a two-way communication between the people and the state government, along with spreading awareness among the people of various policies.
